The University of Mysore established its School of Law in 2006,
marking a significant milestone in legal education in Karnataka. Initially
offering a 5-Year B.A.LL.B. B.Com LLB. (Hons) course starting from 2007, the
School operates under a self-financed scheme within the Department of Law. This
initiative received approval from the Government of Karnataka and recognition
from the Bar Council of India, New Delhi, ensuring its adherence to national
standards in legal education.
The School of Law prides itself on imparting high-quality legal
education aimed at nurturing a generation that values equality, human dignity,
and social consciousness. This ethos is instilled through rigorous academic
programs and a curriculum designed to engage students deeply in socio-legal
issues. Central to this endeavor are the highly qualified faculty members,
including 11 with PhD degrees, supported by 14 guest faculty and additional
invited faculty members possessing UGC qualifications. This academic prowess
ensures that students receive comprehensive insights into both theoretical and
practical aspects of law.
The overarching goal of the School is to produce competent
advocates and legal officers equipped to tackle a wide array of socio-legal
challenges prevalent in society today. Through specialized training and
educational initiatives, students are prepared to address issues ranging from
consumer rights to good governance, international law, alternative dispute
resolution, and the intersection of law and medicine.
The University of Mysore has demonstrated its commitment to the
School of Law by allocating substantial funding exceeding Six Crores for the
construction of a dedicated and state-of-the-art building. This investment
underscores the university's dedication to fostering excellence in legal
education and providing students with a conducive learning environment.
Moreover, the School of Law actively fosters collaborations with
other prestigious national and international law schools, facilitating exchange
programs for both faculty and students. These partnerships enrich the
educational experience by exposing students to diverse legal perspectives and
global best practices.
The School of Law at the University of Mysore has been actively
promoting global dialogue and intellectual engagement through several impactful
initiatives. Recently, it organized the inaugural International Model United
Nations Conference on March 2, 2020, focusing on "Impact of cybercrimes on
International Security and Human Rights." Led by Mr. Sayed Qudrat Hashimy
as Secretary General and overseen by Prof. MK Ramesh from the National Law
School of India University, Bangalore, the event showcased the School's
commitment to fostering international understanding and academic rigor.
Through these initiatives, the School of Law at the University of
Mysore has continued to demonstrate leadership in legal education and a strong
commitment to addressing global challenges through informed dialogue and
collaborative efforts. These efforts include organizing several Model United
Nations conferences focusing on critical issues and hosting webinars aimed at
advancing international discourse on pressing matters. These activities not
only enhance academic rigor but also promote awareness and propose solutions to
significant global issues.
Looking ahead, the School of Law aims to establish specialized chairs in critical areas such as Consumer Law, Good Governance and Right to Information, International Studies, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Law and Medicine. These chairs will further enhance the School's research capabilities and contribute significantly to the discourse on contemporary legal issues.
